Keta Municipal Assembly joined the rest of the country to mark Green Ghana Day at the St. Peter Claver R.C. Basic School Park, Dzelukope. The event forms part of a national initiative introduced in 2021 by the Government of Ghana to replenish the country’s depleted forest cover and promote environmental conservation.
The Green Ghana initiative was established to address the alarming rate of deforestation and its impact on climate change, biodiversity loss, and the degradation of ecosystems. By encouraging tree planting, the program seeks to restore natural habitats, improve atmospheric conditions, and mitigate the effects of climate change on communities.
This year’s event, held under the theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” saw the planting of approximately 10 million tree seedlings nationwide, with 8,000 seedlings allocated to Keta Municipality. The launch ceremony at Dzelukope was led by the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Emmanuel Gemegah. Other dignitaries in attendance included the Divisional Police Commander, a representative of the Parish Priest, Assembly Members, the District Manager of the Forestry Commission, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, school authorities, and pupils of R.C. Basic School.
Following the formal opening, the dignitaries participated in a ceremonial tree planting exercise within the school park. Prior to the event, the Forestry Commission coordinated the distribution of seedlings to all 22 electoral areas within the municipality. Each Assembly Member was tasked with ensuring the delivery of the seedlings to basic and secondary schools in their jurisdictions for planting and ongoing nurturing.
As part of the implementation strategy, Assembly Members are expected to submit periodic reports on the survival and growth rates of the planted trees within their electoral areas. This monitoring process aims to ensure the long-term success of the initiative and encourage active community participation in environmental sustainability efforts.
The Hon. MCE commended all stakeholders for their support and reiterated the importance of environmental stewardship, particularly in the wake of increasing climate-related challenges. The celebration concluded with enthusiastic participation from school children, teachers, and community members, symbolizing a united commitment to creating a greener and healthier future for the Keta Municipality.
