The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Keta Municipal Assembly has stepped up efforts to improve sanitation and public health as part of its 2024 Annual Action Plan. Key issues addressed included overgrown weeds, wastewater spillage, stagnant water, and improper waste disposal in residential areas.

Residents were given a two-day ultimatum to clear weeds around their compounds and surroundings. They were also directed to construct and cover soakaway pits to reduce wastewater spillage and to use public dumping sites and waste bins for solid waste disposal.

A follow-up inspection revealed that most affected areas had complied — weeds were cleared, soakaway pits constructed, and residents began using designated dumping sites.

Additionally, the unit conducted domiciliary inspections in 5,400 houses to monitor sanitation conditions. These inspections aim to provide management with firsthand insight into local sanitation challenges and guide timely, effective interventions.

The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit is responsible for promoting, protecting, and maintaining public health by controlling environmental factors that pose risks. It works in collaboration with community stakeholders, leveraging their skills and resources to create a cleaner, healthier, and more productive municipality.

The Keta Municipal Assembly remains committed to sustaining proper environmental sanitation and fostering safe, healthy communities.
