The Keta Municipal Assembly has supported 50 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with funds from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to promote economic empowerment and self-reliance.
At a ceremony held at the Municipal Assembly Hall, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Wisdom Seade, encouraged beneficiaries to use the support responsibly to strengthen their livelihoods and demonstrate accountability. He said the initiative reflects the Assembly’s commitment to inclusion, dignity, and the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
“Our message to persons with disabilities is clear: the support must be used wisely to improve livelihoods and promote self-reliance for sustainable independence,” he stated. He also urged PWDs who are yet to benefit to remain patient, assuring them that more support would be provided.
The Volta Regional Chairperson of the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations (GFD), Madam Elikplim Klu, called on all stakeholders to address stigma, discrimination, and abuse against persons with disabilities, particularly women, which continue to undermine their dignity and participation in society. She commended the Assembly for the timely disbursement of the funds and appealed for regular and prompt releases in the future.
The Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Mr. Robert Kotey Ashie, disclosed that the beneficiaries included 14 visually impaired persons, 23 physically challenged persons, six hearing impaired, three speech impaired, three with multiple disabilities, and one person with a mental disability, comprising 24 males and 26 females.
Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Assembly and the government, pledging to use the funds to improve their livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to society.
