The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Hon. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has commissioned a mechanised water supply project at Anyako in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, bringing long-awaited relief to communities that have struggled with water challenges for decades.

The project is expected to significantly improve access to clean and safe drinking water for the people of Anyako, Konu, Seva, and surrounding communities, many of whom have endured over 20 years of limited access to potable water.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon. Adjei stated that the project, which was completed in less than five months, forms part of the Government’s “Big Push” infrastructure agenda, aimed at accelerating investments in key sectors such as roads, energy, ports, health, education, agriculture, and water.

He explained that the facility comprises a pump house, a portable water treatment unit, transmission pipelines, and an extensive distribution network, designed to deliver clean water directly to households and standpipes within the beneficiary communities.

Hon. Adjei noted that the project would bring numerous benefits, including reducing water-borne diseases, ensuring reliable water supply for households, schools, and health facilities, and easing the burden on women and children who previously had to travel long distances to access water.

He further indicated that the Government has undertaken reforms in the rural water sector to strengthen service delivery, adding that the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) has been mandated to manage publicly funded water facilities in rural communities.

According to the Minister, the project incorporates smart taps and a solar hybrid power system, which will enhance operational efficiency, minimise water wastage, generate revenue for maintenance, and promote environmental sustainability.

Hon. Adjei urged residents of the beneficiary communities to protect and safeguard the facility, emphasising the need for strong community involvement in maintaining the system. He also encouraged the timely reporting of faults and prompt payment of water tariffs to ensure the sustainability of the project.

The Minister commended the Chief Executive Officer of the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, Mr Vincent Kuagbenu, the contractor, and the consultant teams for their dedication and professionalism in successfully delivering the project. He also acknowledged the invaluable support of traditional authorities in facilitating the completion of the initiative.

In his remarks, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, expressed satisfaction with the successful completion of the project, describing it as a model for future rural water supply projects in the country. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to expanding access to potable water and improving infrastructure across the region.

Hon. Gunu further urged authorities responsible for managing the facility to adopt a strong maintenance culture to ensure the continuous supply of water to the beneficiary communities. He added that the project is expected to stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities within the area.

Chairman of the occasion, Togbi Badu IV, Head of the Klevia Clan, expressed appreciation to the Government for addressing the long-standing water crisis in the area and improving the living conditions of the people.

The Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, together with the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Hon. Wisdom Seade, and the CEO of CWSA, Mr Vincent Kuagbenu, also welcomed the project and described it as a major milestone that would significantly improve the lives of residents.

The Community Water and Sanitation Agency is expected to provide technical backstopping support to the Keta Municipal Assembly to ensure effective management and long-term sustainability of the water system.

The project has been widely described as setting a new benchmark for rural water service delivery and demonstrates the Government’s continued commitment to improving access to potable water across the country.
