The Keta Municipal Assembly (KeMA), through its Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, has inaugurated the Visually Impaired Persons (Blind) and Caregivers of Children with Disabilities and Intellectually Challenged Persons Association under the theme, “Promoting Inclusion, Equal Opportunities and Collective Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.”
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Keta Municipal Assembly Hall, brought together representatives from government institutions, the health sector, disability organisations, caregivers, and members of the disability community to strengthen collaboration and promote the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Disability Fund Management Committee, Mr. Godwin Adzipome, underscored the importance of strong disability associations in advancing advocacy and improving the well-being of persons with disabilities within the municipality.
Speaking on the purpose of the programme, the Head of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr. Fred Selorm Kasu, described the inauguration as a significant milestone in promoting inclusive development and collective advocacy. He noted that the association provides a recognised platform for persons with visual impairment, caregivers of children with disabilities, and persons with intellectual disabilities to engage with stakeholders, access available opportunities, and participate actively in local governance and national disability programmes.
Delivering a goodwill message, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Seth Kpodji, reaffirmed the Assembly’s unwavering commitment to disability inclusion, equal opportunities, and the empowerment of persons with disabilities. He encouraged the newly inaugurated association to work closely with the Assembly and other stakeholders to advance the interests of its members.
The programme also featured remarks by the Regional President, Mr. Prince Akunor, who encouraged members to remain united and actively champion advocacy initiatives. Mr. Che Tsatsu Sorkpor, Head of the Mental Health Unit of Keta Government Hospital, delivered an informative presentation on healthcare access, rehabilitation services, inclusive education, mental well-being, and caregiver support.
A major highlight of the event was the official inauguration and introduction of the Association’s Executive Members by the Guest of Honour, Mad. Margaret Dorvlo (MPHN). The newly elected executives pledged to promote unity, advocate for the rights of members, and work diligently to improve the lives of persons with disabilities across the Keta Municipality.
The programme concluded with the presentation of the Association’s objectives, an acceptance speech by the newly elected Chairperson, an interactive open forum, a vote of thanks, a closing prayer, a group photograph, and a networking session.
The inauguration marks another important milestone in the Keta Municipal Assembly’s efforts to strengthen disability inclusion, promote equal opportunities, and enhance collaboration among stakeholders. The Assembly remains committed to ensuring that persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in the municipality’s development and that no one is left behind.
