Hon. Wisdom Seade, the Municipal Chief Executive today, visited communities affected by tidal waves following a distress call about severe sea tides causing destruction to homes. He was accompanied by the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Assembly’s NADMO Zonal Coordinator, and the Assembly Engineer to assess the situation and meet with affected residents.
The Assembly Member for Kedzikope, Hon. Vincent Pomary, recounted how the incident began and detailed the extent of the flooding. He reported that about 50 homes in his electoral area had been affected and appealed for immediate support, including the provision of Wellington boots as temporary relief for the most severely impacted residents.
Assessing the cause of the tidal waves, Mr. James-Ocloo David Gasper, the Assembly’s NADMO Zonal Coordinator, explained that the unusually high tides were triggered by heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for the Abutiakope Electoral Area, Hon. Promise Kofi Bakah, expressed concern over the indiscriminate construction of houses close to the sea without proper permits from the Assembly. He emphasized the dangers posed by such practices and called for urgent action against individuals building in unauthorized zones. In his electoral area alone, about 11 households were affected.
Hon. Seade expressed shock at the level of destruction and stressed the urgent need for stakeholder engagement and community consultation to raise awareness about coastal safety. He highlighted the importance of establishing a buffer zone along the coastline to protect lives and property, given the unpredictable nature of the sea.
The MCE also issued a strong advisory, urging residents to stop erecting permanent structures near the shoreline and to ensure that all building projects are properly permitted by the Assembly.
