The Keta Municipal Assembly, through the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and in collaboration with relevant stakeholder institutions, has conducted a flood assessment and community sensitization exercise in flood-prone communities within the municipality.
The exercise formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to enhance disaster preparedness, promote flood safety awareness, and protect lives and property during the flooding season. The team visited Abor Hatorgodo R.C. Primary School and the Anyako Community, where residents have been affected by flooding.
The exercise brought together representatives from the Keta Municipal NADMO, Ghana National Fire Service, National Ambulance Service, Department of Agriculture, Ghana Health Service, Environmental Health Unit, Department of Social Welfare, Information Services Department, Municipal Education Directorate, Assembly Members, and media representatives.
The team engaged residents on flood preparedness measures, emergency response procedures, environmental sanitation practices, and the need for community cooperation during disaster situations. Residents were encouraged to promptly report emergencies to the appropriate authorities and cooperate with emergency agencies whenever evacuation becomes necessary.
During the assessment, the team inspected flood-affected areas within the Anyako Community and observed that floodwaters had affected some access routes and residential areas. The Environmental Health Officers also identified improper disposal of refuse near stagnant floodwater, which poses environmental and public health risks.
Health officials educated residents on preventive measures against waterborne diseases, including cholera, typhoid fever, and diarrhoea, through proper hygiene practices and the use of safe drinking water. The Department of Agriculture also sensitized farmers on the impact of flooding on farmlands and advised them on measures to reduce losses.
The Committee observed that some sections of the affected communities remain vulnerable to flooding, with stagnant floodwater affecting movement and creating sanitation concerns. The team further noted the need for continuous public education, improved waste management, and stronger collaboration between the Assembly, emergency response agencies, and community members.
The exercise concluded with a call on residents to support flood prevention efforts by avoiding the dumping of refuse into drains, lagoons, and flood-prone areas. Community leaders were also encouraged to assist in early warning dissemination and emergency response coordination.
The Keta Municipal Assembly remains committed to strengthening disaster preparedness, improving flood risk management, and working with stakeholders to safeguard lives, property, and livelihoods across the municipality.
