In preparation for the upcoming rainy season, the Keta Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Vui Electoral area, successfully organized a major clean-up exercise at the Government Public Cemetery in Vui, near Keta Business College, on March 31st and April 13th, 2025.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Assembly Member, Unit Committee Members, and opinion leaders of the Vui community, was supervised by the Environmental Health Officers from the Keta Municipal Assembly, with active support from students on practical attachment from the School of Hygiene, Ho.
The exercise aimed to improve environmental sanitation within the cemetery, which had become overgrown with weeds and littered with refuse. Additionally, the clean-up sought to restore dignity to the area and prevent poor drainage conditions that could pose health hazards with the onset of the rainy season.
Tasks undertaken during the exercise included clearing thick vegetation, removing accumulated refuse, restoring access paths, and desilting choked gutters around the cemetery. The Environmental Health Officers seized the opportunity to educate volunteers on the importance of cemetery sanitation, particularly during the rainy season.
Participating students gained valuable hands-on experience in public health environmental management. Community leaders expressed satisfaction with the efforts and pledged to organize similar exercises periodically to maintain high public health standards.
Although the exercise was successful, some challenges were encountered, including a low turnout during the initial stages, inadequate tools and equipment, and the absence of a designated waste disposal site, which necessitates further collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
The Keta Municipal Assembly commends the Vui community for their proactive approach to environmental sanitation and looks forward to continued partnership in promoting public health initiatives.
