The Dzelukope Zonal Council of the Keta Municipal Assembly successfully organized the Monthly National Sanitation Day Clean-Up Exercise on Saturday, 6th June 2026, across the Amugo, Afugo and Vui Electoral Areas.
The exercise formed part of the Government’s National Sanitation Day initiative aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness, improving public health and encouraging community participation in sanitation management. It also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which seeks to ensure access to clean water and sanitation for all.
The clean-up exercise brought together Assembly Members, Unit Committee Members, Environmental Health Officers, officials of the Keta Municipal Assembly and community residents who actively participated in various sanitation activities across the electoral areas.
In the Amugo Electoral Area, led by Hon. Seth Azaglo Tay, participants undertook extensive weeding, sweeping and desilting activities at key locations, including the public toilet at Matanawuikpedzi behind Vodafone, Adablakope, the Isolation Back area near the hospital and around the KETASCO Boys’ Hostel. Students of the hostel also joined the exercise, assisting with sweeping and refuse collection.
At the Afugo Electoral Area, under the leadership of Hon. Edwina Matsakawo, residents carried out a beach clean-up exercise at Zortorglo Beach. The team swept the shoreline, cleared weeds and collected refuse, which was later transported to the final disposal site.
In the Vui Electoral Area, led by Hon. Wisdom Klu, participants cleaned major roads and public spaces, including the stretch along the Accra-Aflao Highway from Busco Junction to Keta Hospital and from Vui Junction to Vui Township. Additional sanitation activities were carried out at Jubilee Back and Hotokpodzi-Vui Township, where refuse dump sites were cleared and overgrown weeds removed.
A major highlight of the exercise was the active participation of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Wisdom Seade, and the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Seth Kpodji, together with their team, who monitored activities across the various communities. During their visits to the work sites, the MCE commended residents for their commitment to environmental cleanliness and encouraged them to sustain the effort to keep their communities clean, healthy and environmentally friendly.
The exercise was supervised by Environmental Health Officers of the Municipal Assembly, who provided technical guidance and ensured that sanitation activities were carried out in accordance with environmental health standards.
Although the exercise was largely successful, some challenges were encountered, including low participation in certain areas due to funerals, weddings, market activities and heavy rainfall. The exercise also highlighted the need for additional sanitation tools, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPEs) to support future clean-up efforts.
Despite these challenges, the exercise achieved significant sanitation improvements across the three electoral areas and demonstrated the commitment of residents, community leaders and the Assembly towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment within the municipality.
