The Keta Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has hosted a joint delegation from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), and NADMO Headquarters to train personnel on field data collection and assess the impact of flooding in affected communities within the Keta Municipality.

The training, facilitated by Mr. Paa Kwasi, Madam Maame Akosua, and Mr. Franklyn Agyemang Badu, aimed at equipping NADMO officers with practical skills in data collection techniques and assessment methodologies to support ongoing flood response and humanitarian interventions.

Speaking after the exercise, the Keta Municipal Director of NADMO, Mr. Wonder Setsoafia Deynu, explained that following the training, the delegation undertook field visits to Aborlove-Nolopi, Anyako, and Konu to assess the impact of the floods and interact with affected residents.

During the assessment, the delegation also engaged Mr. Bonodi, a former Assembly Member and former Presiding Member of the Keta Municipal Assembly, who shared valuable insights into the historical and recurring flooding challenges facing the municipality.

Mr. Deynu disclosed that the team was unable to visit Seva, one of the worst-affected communities, because floodwaters had completely cut off the road linking Konu to the community. He noted that the situation highlighted the severity of the flooding and the urgent need for continued intervention.

The delegation held discussions with community leaders, including Mr. Simon Awadzi, Assembly Member for Aborlove-Nolopi, who outlined the challenges residents continue to face as a result of the floods. The team also interacted with women’s groups, schoolchildren, and fishermen at Anyako, gathering first-hand information on how the flooding has affected livelihoods, education, and daily life.

Mr. Deynu commended Mr. Eric Kwaku Dormenyeku, a NADMO volunteer at Anyako, for his invaluable support in facilitating community engagements and assisting the delegation throughout the field assessment.

He explained that the exercise forms part of a broader collaboration between NADMO, UNICEF, and WHO to collect accurate and timely data to inform humanitarian assistance, disaster response planning, and the effective distribution of relief items to flood-affected communities.

The Municipal NADMO Office expressed its appreciation to traditional authorities, community leaders, residents, and all stakeholders for their cooperation and support during both the training and field assessment.

Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to effective disaster management, Mr. Deynu stated that NADMO will continue to work closely with development partners and community stakeholders to address the flood situation while intensifying efforts to reach inaccessible communities such as Seva with the necessary relief support.

Representatives from UNICEF and WHO, Mr. Paa Kwasi and Madam Maame Akosua, expressed satisfaction with the successful training and assessment exercise. They encouraged NADMO personnel to sustain community engagement and apply the skills acquired to conduct data-driven assessments that will enhance disaster response and improve the delivery of humanitarian assistance to flood victims across the municipality.

The collaboration underscores the shared commitment of NADMO, UNICEF, WHO, and other partners to strengthening disaster preparedness, improving emergency response, and safeguarding the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities in the Keta Municipality.
